Warranty
A roof warranty has three parts
Ask to see each one before you sign.
Material warranty
From the maker of the shingles or panels. It covers manufacturing defects for a set period.
System warranty
Offered when the roof is built with the maker's parts by an installer the maker accepts. Ask which parts, and who registers it.
Workmanship warranty
Ours. It is written on your contract: what it covers, how many years, and what voids it.
Read the words
What lifetime means
When a maker says lifetime, ask whose life and what it covers. It usually means manufacturing defects, for as long as the first owner owns the house, with cover that shrinks after the first years. It is not hail, ice or poor ventilation.
Ice damming that comes from poor ventilation or insulation is usually not covered by a material warranty, which is one more reason we plan the air flow with the roof. The terms, limits and exclusions are in the written warranty; ask to read it before you sign.
